Teocalli Mountain, Crested Butte, CO | bike/hike/bike
We’ve ridden Teocalli ridge so many times, but have never hiked up to the summit of Teocalli Mountain. With summer days running out, we were running out of chances to do this in 2026. The forecast looked clear, and it seemed like the perfect family activity.
We ran into some CB locals on the way up - as usual.
My parents drove to the base of the steep ascent on Teo, and Justin and I e-biked from the tent city parking area. My mom ran to the base of Teocalli mountain, my dad pedalled, and Justin and I biked up on easy mode.
At the start of the hike, we locked our bikes up, changed shoes, and started the hike up. Storm clouds started to form. We watched a dark cloud wrap around the mountain and move away, and we thought we were in the clear.
Right near the summit, Justin crested a peak and saw significantly darker clouds behind. Unfortunately, we had to bail less than a quarter mile from the top as we high-tailed it off the peak before lightning rolled in. We almost made it out before turential torrential hail (can hail be turential torrential?) came pouring down, but not quite. What a fun family friendly adventure. Will have to come back for a V2 (without storms, preferably).
From the ridge, my mom went back down the front, and we continued to ride down to tent city.
