Double Top, Crested Butte, CO | 28.5 mi, 5859 ft, e-bike
New bike ride, new bike day! We assumed this lap would surely be fast, especially on the e-bikes. We’ve talked about pedaling this lap on the analog bikes but decided it would take too long before work.
We set out early in the morning and “trail mode-ed” our way up Brush Creek. There was a taste of fall in the air as aspen leaves started to cover the forest floor.
We rode from wide, blown-out double track to steep and loose single track to, finally, open alpine.
The views were gorgeous, and our batteries had drained to about 60-70% at this point. We were relieved to be done with the hard part and onto the gradual downhill on Double Top (or so we thought).
Double Top, instead, delivered continuous moto-ruts, steep hill climbs, and a film crew of 20+ dirt bikes. Great trail for motos, but also a great trail for views! Not sure I would recommend to mountain bikes, but it was good for the plot on the e-bikes.
Double Top finished right at the top of 409.5, which, besides 403 and the other Crested Butte classics, is the best trail in the area for a trail bike. Entirely downhill, fast and rooty.
At the end, Justin was down to eco-mode and a nearly completely drained battery and I was down to about 15% on trail-mode.
